This course introduces learners to key concepts, theories and frameworks for analyzing social policy. The ideological, theoretical and values basis of social policy are examined with a view to understanding how they shape social policy locally, regionally and globally. Selected case studies of social policy interventions in Kenya are also examined.

People live in relationship. Their problems arise partially from the relationships in which they live - the words and actions that bind or divide them in relation to others. However, the also carry within them their internalizations of other people: their self-esteem and self-concept are influenced by how others acted towards them. Clients (individual & group) enter the counselling room under the influence of their present companions and the historical companions who were their family of origin.

Although communities are usually small relative to personal social ties, "community" may also refer to large group affiliations such as national communities, international communities, and virtual communities.[3]

The course reinforces aspects of positive change in behaviour that includes attitudes and problems as a result of misconduct. It explores ways in which behaviour may be said to be pathological and consequently the need for desirable positive amendment in behaviour and the ways this can be improved or brought about, as well as intervention techniques that can be used for this purpose. The course further seeks insight and special attention to the relationships between counsellor and client in transforming behaviour in therapy as well as general psychology including dealing with children, adolescence, mid-life crisis and adults. The influence of the therapist, the power of the counsellor – client relationship and their effects on psychological management are highlighted.

Community participation can be loosely defined as the involvement of people in a community in projects to solve their own problems. People cannot be forced to ‘participate’ in projects which affect their lives but should be given the opportunity where possible. This is held to be a basic human right and a fundamental principle of democracy. Community participation is especially important in emergency sanitation programmes where people may be unaccustomed to their surroundings and new sanitation facilities.
